No, This isn't the One. . .

. . . where I talk about the big story that is overshadowing all the little stories and creating busy-ness in my schedule.

THIS is the one where I talk about how Lily has decided to latch onto the Wimpics (sic) and how in particular she has latched onto "cycling".

Cycling comes on over the main feed on NBC, and I swear I have no idea why, but it does.  So while they cover cycling, they also slide over and cover Sport A and Event B, because the cycling race coverage lasts for. . . SIX HOURS!!!

This means that there's a sport that will occupy Lily's attention, a WIMPIC sport at that, that will occupy her attention for LONG periods of time.  While it's going on, she'll mutter color commentary under her breath.

"Oh, she pedaling her bike."
"She got stuck.  Fall off her bike and get hurt.  It's dangerous."
"Red bike!"

And so on.

Unfortunately the lamp in my TV blew up a few days ago, so we can't capture her attention that way, but the iPad saved our collective asses with the NBC Olympic app that literally has all the video of every sport available for streaming.  That means I can stream 6 hours of cycling to my daughter's delight!

NBC has kind of sucked during the Olympics, but this app (though it as its issues) has been a godsend for Lily.  "I want watch Wimpics."  Done!

And we (my wife and I) have our individual pet peeves about what Lily watches, but right now it's either that or "No No" (Which is Lily-speak for High School Musical), "No-No Summer" (High School Musical 2) or "No No 3" . . . and however much you may love Zac Efron. . . I'm so. sick. of those shows.  I'd rather watch Barney, Wiggles, or Mother Goose Rhymes at this point.

So while my wife is all, "Cycling?  Really??"
I'm all, "CYCLING!!  REALLY!!"

---------------

Yesterday I took Lily home from OT and she was thirsty.  We had gone to McDonald's (therapy day is McDonald's Day in Lilyland) and she SHOULD have had some of her drink left, but I'd tossed it.  Instead she asked for what her mother drinks.  From the back seat:

"I want Diet Coke."

"Sorry baby, Diet Coke's all gone," I replied laughing (I'd never heard her ask for Diet Coke.  I don't think I even realized she'd heard it referenced.  She asks for my Pepsi when I'm drinking it at the table and I'll give her little sips, but that's about it).

"Oh no.  Diet Coke is all gone.  Can you email me Diet Coke?"

"What?"

"Can you email me Diet Coke?"

I couldn't help it, I laughed.  I love how she absorbs new words, and I'm not sure where she picked up the context for this, but I think it's pretty cool usage. . . email defined as "send", or perhaps "give".  She's not far off.

    1. Anytime she does that I end up adopting it. So now the Olympics are the Wimpics. And when Emma calls them the Olympics I correct her and say, "That's the WIMPics"

    2. Calling it the "Wimpics" makes me almost want to watch them.

  3. My favorite part of this is Lily's commentary of the Olympics. SORRY! The Wimpics. I haven't watched a single moment of them - don't care in the least - but from what I've heard, the NBC commentary is terrible. Lily's commentary would give me a reason to watch. You'd get the cute factor and she honestly seems to know more about what's happening on-screen than I do, so I'd learn things. This is a very good opportunity!

    1. We need a campaign to hire Lily as the official new commentator of cycling. Think of the possibilities! Tour de France!

  4. I swear, the Wimpics is some kind of crazy spectrum-kiddo mind magic, because Connor was riveted to the opening ceremonies and all the flags and different nations. It sure beats the hell out of one more episode of Ninjago.

Also, could you email me a pizza for dinner? I'm way too tired to cook tonight.

  5. LOL... Thanks, Jim. I say thanks because your post made me smile on a day when I needed to. Your daughter is adorable. Love Lilly's commentary about the Wimpics. So much more exciting than what we have been getting. :)

  7. It's so funny that she picked up on that! How many times per day we say "Do you have x? Can you email it to me?"

  8. Oh my goodness... that is adorable! I agree with whomever said you should send this to the Coke company. *smiles*

(And I only like the original Wiggles.)

  9. Yep, Lilly is a future triathlete. First it's cycling, then add running and swimming. Then a refreshing diet coke after those hot workouts. I can see it now.

  10. Lily is going to change the future of how we speak the English language - I just know it! All the cool kids will be using Lily-isms in their texts and I don't want to be left behind on this one... So Jim, can you email me some vodka and bacon?

  12. Everything about this is great. I have to say, I would much rather listen to Lily's Wimpic commentary than the actual commentators. Seriously.

  13. You really need to video tape some of this commentary and give us a YouTube version of the Wimpics! Sounds so awesome! And when you do figure it out, email me some pizza too, 'k?

    1. I'll try. She's inconsistent with it, and won't do command performances, but maybe I'll catch it when the TV is fixed and she's in a chatty mood.

      Email me some sushi

  14. If you e-mail her a picture of a Diet Coke, then then she can enjoy it without actually having any.

I love her commentary! WAY better than NBC's.

  16. Willy Wonka could have figured out this whole emailing Diet Coke thing. I think Lily's on to something!

In other news, I am absolutely going to try to get my daughter into HSM, because that for sure will trump hours and hours of YouTube elevator videos. I think. I'll have to get back to you on that one.

  17. The Wimpics do provide that sensory stimulation they seek. Me too! I am especially 'stimulated' by those male swimmers! just sayin'
Oh and can you please email me a glass of wine and a snickers.
When did Lily begin to speak? My daughter, Maddie (4 1/2) is still Pre-verbal (I hate the phrase non-verbal). I am so looking forward to Maddie-isms.

    1. Lily babbled incessantly from the time she was about two on. But she wasn't really using words so much as making noises. Cute. . . but not particularly helpful. She had some words in her repertoire as early as 1 1/2. . . BUT, it was limited to a handful, "no", "daddy", "car", "cracker", "mommy", and "papa". Literally. . . to answer your question I went back to an old journal I kept for the kids and found an entry dated 7/26/07 that listed those words as the only ones Lily knew.

She stayed at about a dozen or so words for a loooong time. She has a pretty good vocabulary (maybe a thousand or more words) now. . . but her functional speech is very limited.

She has flashes of echolaliac or scripted brilliance, but the rest is pretty spotty.

    2. I try not to compare but I still do! We are still waiting for words- I will take one! Lots of babble but no words. Perhaps the hardest part is just wondering if she will ever speak. Thanks for your blog. Gives me hope.

  18. I could totally go for some emailed wine right now...

I looove the Olympics. I think I may prefer the winter Olympics because Canada tends to do better, and plus in the winter I don't feel so guilty about sitting around watching the Olympics eating cupcakes, since it is not gorgeous outside.

Super, super cute about the cycling. And of all the sports to capture her attention it's so funny it's that one. The male swimmers tend to do it for me...

    1. It does have to be a little irritating to any English speaking country that is not the USA to have all the Olympic coverage be so USA-Centric.

  19. Love all of her "Lily-isms!" We adopt our kids' phrasings for a lot of things, too. "Look at me" quickly became "Turn your head around." Much better, I think.

  20. I think you're totally onto something here. I can imagine a whole new franchise: live sports coverage as narrated by adorable kids. I know I'd be waaaaay more inclined to watch. I can't be alone on this one. Quick, call the patent office!

Also, Lily is basically just envisioning the near future, when we'll totally be able to email ourselves tasty treats. Isn't that what a replicator is in Star Trek? She's just way ahead of the curve.
